Today we’re going to introduce the best options for poster sizes that are also common for printing and marketing. Because standardization lacks, many people who want to print their posters often get confused and wind up with incorrect dimensions for their design. Paper producers do indeed maintain the international standards of paper sizes, but the size of posters has never been regulated. Surprisingly, there is no true standard size for posters. When you start designing posters for an event or promotion, you might be wondering what the standard poster size might be. There is no official and unanimous rating, nevertheless different factors are studied : condition of the poster, printing technique, film fame, director or actors, some famous illustrators, scarcity (censorship, scandal surrounding the film or the poster), streams (example : films from the « Nouvelle vague »).Nothing is better than a poster for a beautiful, cost-effective marketing tool. There are no dates on the posters, but there are different ways to estimate the period of printing such as the film’s release date, the name of the printing firm, stamp, illustrator, etc. The first edition of a poster is usually the most appreciated by collectors (although there are some exceptions), all those types of posters are considered as « original film posters » and can therefore be collected. Some films can also have a second poster, printed after the first one has been censored when released. Then, the offset printing technique replaced it and is still the one used today.īesides the poster printed when the film is released, some posters can benefit from a « new edition » (the poster is reprinted after the film is released) or a « new release » (the film is released again, years after, and a poster is printed, sometimes with a similar design, or with a completely different one). Therefore, those posters are even rarer and more precious today. Until the 60’s, the printing technique was lithography, a process using successive color layers, that allows a really neat result of great quality but it is a complex process that limits even more the number of printed posters. A few posters are not folded but it does not change its price or its authenticity.

Posters are mostly folded when stored because the poster is only an advertising object. The production of the poster is not standardized at all therefore, if a 120x160 cm is rarely larger than 122x161,5cm, a 60x40cm poster can be different of 5 cm. However we must say that those sizes are only given for information. Those composed sizes are rare, not many films use them and their number is even more limited. Among those, you can find the « vertical 2 boards » (120x320 cm or 160x240 cm), the « horizontal 2 boards » (usually 240x160 cm) and the « 4 boards » (320x240 cm).

You can also find « several boards », which is a poster made of several 120x160cm posters displayed side by side. There are also odd sizes such as 40x80 cm and 24圆4 cm that are no longer used nowadays, and which you can only find for releases from the 60’s or the 70’s. Size 80x120 cm is not used anymore except for confidential release. Size 60x160 cm (named « pantalon » in French, « Trousers ») and size 60x80 cm are used, although they are not part of the usual display.

The French film poster come in different sizes the most frequent ones being 120x160 cm (posters to be displayed in front of the movie theaters), and 60x40 cm. This number is very different from one film to another, it also depending on the publisher etc. A film poster is an advertising object, created in order to sell a film punctually and therefore printed in a limited number.
